In 2021, I returned to my home, England, after living abroad for 11 years.
I thought the hard part was done. During my wandering, I’d been through addiction and recovery, marriage and divorce, move after move and loss after loss. I thought going home would be the start of something easier.
But every soul journey unfolds in three parts: the separation, the initiation, and the return. And what I’ve learned is that the return is the hardest, most important, and most rewarding part of all.
This is a newsletter about how to go home after a journey that has changed you. It’s about literal journeys, including my own, but also about reentering everyday life after deep inner journeys—just like the group tour of Hades that we’ve been on since the outbreak of the pandemic.
It’s about carrying what you’ve learned back over the threshold and using it to deepen your own life and your community. And, underneath all this, it’s about how to go home when your home culture never made sense anyway. It’s about how to use your breakdowns and breakthroughs to start building a culture of belonging.
