why not, why should the 'messiah not plot to colonize Mars'?!

The one Great Magician turned water into wine..... and hydrogen into all this, and nothing into something......

That we worship Elon is our issue, that he plots as he does...... well, that is not what is destroying the wonder world.... The Wonder World is on a journey too, and it was careening way off the rails when Elon came along....

How to bring it back to a place where a human future is possible....? As Thomas Berry wrote some years ago, "The task of the our time is to reinvent the human on the species level."....

Thank you for this, and for reading! It was absolutely careening off the rails before Elon came along. Totally with you there. He's a symptom -- that's what I was trying to say. I do think though that there's a difference between turning nothing into something, and plotting to colonize Mars. What is the nature of the drive behind these versions of messiah? Is it generative and life-giving? Or is vampiric? I think that's what I'm interested in.

Great Thomas Berry quote; thank you for sharing.

I dunno if I agree that there is a difference between 'something into nothing' and 'colonizing Mars'..... similar sort of feat, if you ask me.... but that is what the miracle is about..... the transformation, the dance of becoming, etc.

Most of the time the mountain is climbed 'because it can be', sometimes because of something else..... etc. Elon says he like dreaming about a world with space travel... and he sees Mars as the next step..... etc.

So when a mission to Mars is done at a time when many are predicting an end of human life in the next 100 years, it is pretty audacious, silly even. Still, nothing is so surprising as the next surprise. Greening Mars, of course, would be generative and life giving, if and when it is pulled off. Humans are not showing the likely fortitude at the moment at pulling it off. The 'vampiric' behaviour, the rapacious consumption and so on, is a big distraction from what we could be doing if we really gave ourselves over to this grand adventure.... and also fell to our knees in gratitude several times a day.... Another wonderful Thomas Berry quote is: "We are not a collection of objects. WE are a communion of subjects." Mars will be a pipe dream till we actually learn this, I am pretty sure.

I appreciate your article too... thank you.

the edit function is not working... should read, "nothing is so surprising as the next surprise."

I agree that it's in the small things ... 'a quiet accumulation of estimable acts, and start secretly being a new, humble kind of hero of your own story.'

This, I love.

I read recently the phrase 'embody grace' - now that is a way to fill a messiah shaped hole. Imagine what the world might be is this was our obsession. 💚

I appreciate your big thinking and especially like the idea of the 12 step program as an alterative to Messianism.

Thank you for reading! I often think how lucky I am to be an alcoholic and get to be in the 12-step fellowship -- for this and many other reasons.
